Seventeen year-old student drowns during afternoon swim

Seventeen year-old Miguel Quintanilla, an only child and a third form student of Eden Seventh Day Adventist High School died from drowning while swimming with friends on Sunday in the Mopan River.

The popular teen was with five friends when they decided to swim across the river to the other side. They made it across, but on the way back, Quintanilla, it is believed, was immobilized from a leg cramp and drowned.
The youth’s father, Alfredo got the call at around 4:00 p.m. He told The Reporter that that his son was a good swimmer, but that he had just finished having lunch when he decided to swim.

Friends tried to help Quintanilla but by the time they got him out of the water, it was too late.
Benque Viejo police rushed to the river to find Quintanilla’s lifeless body on the river bank where his friends had tried to resuscitate him. He was transported to the San Ignacio Community Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
A post mortem examination was conducted on Monday, and confirmed that the youth died from drowning.

A funeral service for this promising young man was held Tuesday afternoon, attended by many students and friends. His father recalled that his only son had aspired to be a BDF soldier like him.
