Rage & jealousy results in deadly stabbing

By Marion Ali, Assistant Editor

A man from Ladyville died at knife-point in what is believed to be a deadly fit of rage and jealousy just before 9:00 p.m., in Vista del Mar, Belize district. It happened at a residence on Barrier Reef Crescent, where Stephanie Coe and her young child were staying after she had broken up with her common-law husband, Robert Brown – the father of her child.

Police told the media this week that Coe was entertaining a visitor, Gavin Palmerston, 41, on the verandah at the house when Brown showed up. Upset at what he saw, Brown allegedly punched Coe in the face and got in a fight with Palmerson. During the fight, Brown reportedly produced a knife and inflicted four stab wounds to Palmerston’s back.

Badly wounded, Palmerston stumbled into the kitchen area, where he collapsed on the floor and died before police arrived. Brown, police say, fled the scene after the stabbing, but turned himself in to custody that same night. He was arrested and charged on Sunday with ‘murder’, and taken to court on Monday. Magistrate Michelle Trapp remanded him to the Hattieville prison until March 28.

Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Alejandro Cowo, who heads the Eastern Division Crimes Investigations Branch (CIB) told reporters that Palmerson was having a casual conversation with Coe and that there is nothing to suggest there was any kind of provocation to have triggered the fatal attack. Brown’s relatives have claimed, however, that he acted in self-defense.

Police said there was no previous police report of threats made on either party against the other prior to the incident.
