One person is dead and several are injured after a road traffic accident in the Corozal district this week.

According to police, sometime after 6 p.m. on Tuesday between Miles 85 and 86 on the Phillip Goldson Highway, a grey Ford Fusion car, driven by 25-year-old Iris Mabel Chicas began overtaking a van when it crashed head-on into a Toyota Tundra pickup, driven by 65-year-old Chawki Karam Eddin.

Chicas, who was accompanied by 28-year-old Ahmad Shah Amini, died upon impact, while Chawki Karam Eddin suffered injuries to the chest, hip, head and a cut wound to the head. He was travelling along with Muhamade Ahmad Hijize, 36-year-old Jorge Patt, 29-year-old Eucebio Campo, 35-year-old Carlos Elvir and 30-year-old Eleaser Gutierrez.

Jorge Patt survived from a cut wound to the head and complained of pain all over his body. Eucebio Campo said he had chest pain. Carlos Elvir sustained a broken left foot and a cut wound to the head. Both Eleaser Gutierrez and Ahmad Shah Amini were transported to the K.H.M.H.

According to the Officer Commanding the Corozal Police Station, Superintendent Andrew Ramirez, Eddin has been served with a notice of intended prosecution.

“The investigation is still fairly young. Statements have yet to be recorded by several persons who are currently undergoing treatment”, Ramirez said. “Two of them are at the KHMH, so we are coordinating with our counterparts in Belize City to get those statements when these people are able to speak”, he concluded.

Chicas, a resident of San Roman Village, is a recent graduate from the University of Belize.
Police investigations continue.
