Wayne Rocke, a 29-year-old mechanic was shot and killed just a short distance away from his home, while working on a vehicle in a poorly lit area on Reggae Street in the Yarborough area around 8 p.m. on Monday.
According to Superintendent Hilberto Romero, officer commanding the Crimes Investigations Branch (CIB) at Eastern Division, Rocke was seated in the passenger seat of a van he was repairing when a gunman approached him and fired several shots at him. Rocke was hit multiple times.
Rocke’s family rushed out to the scene after hearing the shots and their worst fears were confirmed. Rocke was transported to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital (KHMH) but was pronounced dead on arrival.
Romero said police have no leads in relation to this murder and fear that due to the poorly lit conditions in the area, it may have been difficult for anyone to see the assailant. Still, Romero said, the Belize Police Department is encouraging anyone who may have any useful information in relation to solving this murder to contact the 922 TIPS hotline.
Rocke’s family has acknowledged that he was implicated in several criminal offenses in the past and had been tied to gangs, but say he was working and trying to better his life.
