A 40 year-old Guatemalan man was remanded to the Hattieville Prison after being accused of tying up, gagging and viciously raping his own step-daughter with a knife to her throat, twice.
Dangriga Magistrate, Patricia Arana denied him bail on Thursday on two counts of ‘rape’, two counts of ‘aggravated assault’ and ‘uttering threatening words’ upon his 12 year-old stepdaughter.
The incidents occurred last week Thursday and Friday, both times in the afternoon.
The girl, the eldest child in the family, told police that the first assault took place between 3:30 and 4:00 p.m., when she went home from school. She said her stepfather sent her younger siblings, ages eight, six, and eight months old, to buy ice at a shop and that was when he tied her hands behind her back, gagged her and covered her eyes with a rag, held her at knife-point and raped her.
The next day the girl, traumatized by the incident, did not attend classes. When her stepfather came home at around 1:00 in the afternoon and met her home alone, he repeated the act. On both occasions, the children’s mother, a 38 year-old Belizean, was away at work.
A doctor has since confirmed that the child has been carnally known. The stepfather is in police hands and it is expected that he will be charged with rape, aggravated assault and threatening words.
The Reporter has received reports that the accused, whose name cannot be revealed in order to protect the victim, has been abusive of the entire family. He moved in with them four years ago, when he met the girl’s mother. Together, he and the woman share the two younger children.
