Eugene Reneau, 52, was remanded to the Hattieville Prison on Thursday on charges of attempted murder, use of deadly means of harm and two counts of wounding, after he entered the house where his estranged common-law wife was staying on Saturday night, and chopped her with a machete on her head and hand.

The incident happened on Mendoza Street at the Mendoza residence in Esperanza Village, Cayo. Reneau had dropped off the couple’s two children at the house for his common-law wife, Shanel Robinson, 27. That first visit occurred without incident, but later that night Reneau met Robinson at another place and that was when the confrontation began.

Robinson decided to go home, and Reneau apparently followed her. Police believe that during the course of the night he convinced one of their children to open the door. He entered with a machete and attacked Robinson.

One member of the Mendoza family was awakened by Robinson’s screams. When she went to investigatel, saw she Reneau with the machete in his hand. When she screamed, Reneau ran off but was apprehended by other members of the Mendoza family, who restrained him until the police arrived.

In the course of the civilian arrest, Reneau also stabbed Ralph Mendoza, the owner of the house on the right foot with a knife that he apparently took with him. Mendoza has been treated and released, but Shanel Robinson had to be transferred to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital in Belize City for further treatment and for surgery to re-attach four fingers of her right hand.

Eugene Reneau, who already has a charge of rape against him in the Belize City Supreme Court for another incident in 2014, has remanded to jail until July 2nd.
