INTERPOL announced last Friday that it has issued an arrest warrant for Belizean Michael Joseph Silva, 28.
INTERPOL says Silva, a resident of San Ignacio, is wanted for the September 2011 murder of his then girl friend, 19-year-old Maritza Santos.
Silva, the son of former People’s United Party minister Dan Silva, is listed on INTERPOL’s web site as “wanted by Belize judicial authorities for prosecution.”
Santos was found dead in a room at Silva’s house in the Kontiki area of San Ignacio Town. Her body had a large cut wound to the head and was lying on a bed with a pillow covering her face.
San Ignacio Police also found Silva at home, but they did not immediately arrest him. Instead they rushed him to Belize Health Partners in Belize City for medical treatment, as he had ingested the herbicide Paraquat SC 20 in an attempt to commit suicide.
Police also found a quart of the herbicide inside the kitchen of the house with several slips of paper containing notes.
Silva was admitted in a critical condition to Belize Health Partners, but he later sought further medical treatment in Guatemala, where he disappeared.. He reportedly is still in Guatemala.
