Infant dies in traffic mishap

Ariani Rodriguez, an infant less than a year old, was killed in a traffic accident on Sunday evening when her vehicle careened off the Hummingbird Highway between miles 50 and 51, throwing her ont o the road.

The baby was traveling with her parents and eight other persons in a Mitsubishi Endeavor, from Armenia Village towards Belmopan at around 5:30 p.m., when tragedy struck.

The 25-year-old driver, Marvin Zuniga, told police he lost control of the vehicle. His passengers included the owner of the vehicle, Claudia O’Brien, 32, who suffered injuries to her head and body; Amir Rodriguez, who received a large cut wound to his head and a fractured arm; Stephanie Rodriguez, who received head and body injuries and a fractured right leg; 14-year-old Manuel Martinez, who received a fractured left arm, facial injuries, cut wounds and bruises to both legs; Lizeth Martinez, 12, who suffered two broken legs and a cut wound to the head; Gabriel Martinez, 9, who received a cut wound to the right side of the face and bruises to his forehead; Graciela Martinez, who suffered a cut wound to the head; Leonela Rodriguez, who also received head and body injuries, and Tirelly Martinez, 15, who received minor scrapes to her legs.

Police have not yet charged Zuniga with any traffic offense, but they have served him with a Notice of Intended Prosecutions pending the outcome of investigations.
