Highway accidents claim two

Two persons died in separate traffic accidents over the weekend in the Orange Walk District.

Around 10 last Friday night, 24 year-old Alonzo Vasquez lost control of the vehicle he was driving after he suffered a blowout as he headed home on the Trinidad/August Pine Ridge road.

His black Mazda pickup truck flipped a number of times and Vasquez was flung from the vehicle. He suffered severe head trauma died about two hours later at the Northern Regional Hospital.

The other accident occurred between miles 51 and 52 on the Philip Goldson Highway near the Toll Bridge. It claimed the life of Bernabe Roberts, 53, a mechanic.

Roberts was riding a bicycle on the highway heading towards Orange Walk Town when a Dodge Dakota pick-up truck traveling in the same direction knocked him down.

Jaime Sarsenio, a resident of Carmelita Village, told police that he tried to avoid a head-on collision with another vehicle and didn’t see Roberts until it was to late to brake. .
Sarsenio rushed Roberts to the Northern Regional but he was pronounced dead on arrival.
