Sunday night’s peace was broken by a shooting in the Lake Independence area which claimed the life of Japhet Martinez, 27.
Martinez reportedly left his girlfriend’s house on a bicycle to go to his mother’s house and stopped at a nearby store at the intersection of Alicia and Estel Streets, where a man of fair complexion approached him with a gun.

People in the area say Martinez tried to escape by riding off in haste, but the gunman pursued him and shot him, hitting Martinez several times in the back.

The killer then rode off and managed to escape.
Martinez was rushed to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital, where he died half an hour later.

Police have retrieved video footage from a surveillance camera in the store, but according to Sr. Supt. Alden Dawson, the tape shows very little evidence of the shooting.
Martinez leaves behind his girlfriend, whom he planned to marry, and an eight-month-old baby, whom he arranged to have baptized the day before he met his death.
