Guatemalan jailed for sexually assaulting elderly woman

A Guatemalan man was sent to jail this week, for sexually assaulting his 77-year-old mother-in law, who is confined to a wheelchair.
Rubio Castro appeared in the Corozal Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, to answer to one count of “Harm” and one count of “Sexual Assault.”

He is scheduled to re appear in the Corozal Magistrate’s Court on December 23. Castro is accused of inappropriately touching the legs and fondling the breasts of his disabled mother-in-law, Juanita Torres.

Torres reported to police that around 10:00 a.m. on October 1, she was at her home in San Joaquin Village, sitting in her wheelchair on the veranda when Castro approached her and took her into the house to commit the act.
Officer commanding the Corozal police formation, Dennis Arnold says that by virtue of the evidence against Castro he does not foresee a problem securing a conviction.

“The case is pretty open-and-shut. We have a witness and the lady had a “vamp” (temporary discoloration) on her breast when they brought her to the station”, Arnold said.

The incident coincided with International Day of Older Persons, and drew the fury of organizations such as the National Council on Aging and HelpAge Belize.
Both organizations are calling for a thorough investigation to be conducted, including a medical examination for the elderly woman and counselling sessions to look after her mental health.

They also recommend looking into whether or not this kind of abuse has occurred before and to what extent.
