A shooting incident two miles inside the Belize border with Guatemala in the Chiquibul Nature Reserve while Belizean and Guatemalan representatives are meeting in Antigua, Guatemala has made the territorial dispute between the two countries all the more sensitive.
The incident occurred on Monday afternoon, June 3.
The victim, identified as 21 year old ///////“Sacasa”, was carried out of the reserve by BDF soldiers on foot on Tuesday after spending Monday night in the forest. The victim has undergone surgery onc at the Western Regional Hospital for a gunshot injury to the abdomen. and is now in stable condition.
Earlier this year concerns circulated when the Ministry of National Security announced that BDF patrol teams near the border with Guatemala would be given rubber bullets along with their live rounds to use as a deterrent to intruders on Belizean soil. Why the Guatemalan was shot with live ammunition in the abdomen is an issues currently under investigation. Belize’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Wilfred Elrington, has said that “until we get all the information from the BDF, we don’t know what the circumstances are.”
The man remains under police guard at the Western Regional Hospital in a critical condition but stable condition.
