Orange Walk police are sifting through the rubble of a fire in Carmelita Village to determine whether it was intentionally set.
That area of Carmelita does not have an electricity supply.
Police say the 30 by 40-foot wooden building was reported to be burning around 8:20 p.m., on Sunday. Its occupants, Clarence Curtis Wade, 32, and his girlfriend were not at home. They lost all their belongings to the fire.
A nearby resident told the media that he didn’t see anyone near the house at the time of the blaze. This is what has police baffled, because as far as they can tell, there was nothing in the house to cause combustion. Investigators are awaiting the findings of the Fire Department to see if they need to pursue any particular angle.
The owner of the house, Ademar Zamir Escalante, 36, of Queen Victoria Avenue, Orange Walk Town, said the house was worth $22,000 and was not insured.
