A Belize City man who offered a ride to a woman he picked up at a bus stop on Friday was arraigned on aggravated assault of a sexual nature and theft charges, in the Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday.
Shawn Eusey, 26, a computer technician, appeared before Magistrate Leslie Hamilton, and pleaded not guilty to both charges. Hamilton initially denied him bail, due to outstanding court fines.
But before the court’s business day was over, Eusey paid his outstanding $1,200 court fines and was released on bail of $1,000 plus one surety of the same amount.
The woman, according to police, reported that the accused picked her up in his van. He then drove the vehicle into a few streets in the Belama Phase 1 area, eventually stopping at an open lot on Superintendent George Arthurs Street.
He then left his driver’s seat and went around to the passenger’s side, opened the door and attempted to fondle the woman’s breast.
But she struggled with him, and screamed out for help. Someone in the area heard her screams and dialed 911.
Police from the Belama Police Station came and rescued, the woman, but not before Eusey allegedly made off with her $200 cell phone and a gold chain of unknown value.
Eusey is to return to court on September 5.
The condition of his bail is that he is to stay away from the complainant and report to the Queen Street Police Station every Monday between 7:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m., until his case is concluded.
