Julio Macal, a cane farm worker from Xaibe Village, Corozal, was crushed to death on Saturday around 1 a.m., as he and his colleague, Ismael Camal approached the Tower Hill Sugar Factory to deliver cane.
The two were towing a trailer loaded with cane and Macal got off to check something underneath the rear wheel of the trailer. Camal moved off, crushing Macal in the process.
Unaware of what had happened, Camal continued to drive, dragging Macal, who was trapped between the wheels, for several feet before coming to a full stop.
While police have served Camal with a Notice of Intended Prosecution, they are also investigating whether the men were under the influence because no one delivers cane at that hour of the morning.
CTV-3 News in Orange Walk reported that cane farm workers start to line up around 5 a.m. to begin their delivery of sugarcane to the factory, which opens to receive the sugarcane at 6.
