A woman who went swimming with her boyfriend drowned in the Belize River near the Baboon Sanctuary in Bermudian Landing on Sunday afternoon.

Denia Zelaya, 23, a Honduran who lived on Cemetery Road in Belize City, reportedly went with her boyfriend, Police Constable Dion Bellini behind Black Howler Evolution Tours in Bermudian Landing village.  The two were swimming, Bellini reported, when strong currents swept Zelaya away.

Bellini said his efforts to try to save Zelaya were fruitless, as were the efforts of villagers to later recover her body.

Search efforts were conducted on Sunday and Monday, but strong currents forced the search to stop early in the day.  On Monday at around midday, Zelaya’s body was retrieved from the river.
