BDF volunteer Clifford Cruz shot dead while on guard duty

A Belize Defence Force volunteer, Private Isaac Cruz, 21, was shot and killed while he was on guard duty at Militia Hall, the headquarters of the BDF volunteer element, located at Mile one on the George Price Highway shortly before 5:00 Monday evening, October 1.

Police have arrested the 17-year-old private volunteer who shot Cruz. Police say they intend to charge him with mur-de .Cruz has been a volunteer since he was 15, his older sister Genis Cruz, told The Reporter.

On September 27, he turned 21 and was looking forward to enlistment in the regular BDF after he learnt that he had been promoted.

Isaac Cruz expected  to begin professional training in a matter of days.

Unconfirmed reports say the minor  used a high calibre AR-15 rifle to shoot Cruz in the belly. The bullet came out through his spine and did immense damage, destroying one of his kidneys, his sister told The Reporter.

A desperate attempt by surgeons at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital to save his life proved futile.

The Ministry of National Security’s Public Relations Officer, Major Rafael Martinez, told The Reporter that both individuals were on guard duty when they became involved in a violent argument in the guard room.
