Gian Guerra, 32, of San Francisco Street, Orange Walk town is at the Hattieville Prison on remand, facing a charge of murder for the stabbing death of Belize Defense Force Corporal, Rafael Rivas.
Police allege that Guerra stabbed the 12-year career officer seven times during a fight at Panda’s Bar near Central Park in Orange Walk town at around 9:00 Saturday night.
The two were fighting, when another man held Rivas from behind, police said. That was when Guerra produced a knife and inflicted the fatal wounds, according to police.
Police found Rivas lying face down in his own blood at the entrance of the bar’s bathroom. He was already dead.
Investigators are now looking for someone they believe can assist in their investigation.
The killing of the BDF soldier has shocked his family members who are trying to come to terms with the sudden loss and the way it happened.
His brother, Corporal Hilberto Rivas, who is with the Belize Coast Guard, told reporters following the killing that it is still unclear if Rivas was drinking.
He said that he received a text message on his phone that suggested there was a surveillance recording of the incident.
Guerra’s next court appearance is due on November 26th.
