Abducted one-year-old returned

Belize City, Tues. Mar. 26, 2013.

Kidnappers, who reportedly abducted a one-year-old child Sunday night and demanded a ransom, have returned the child today, Tuesday – the deadline for the said ransom.

Unconfirmed reports say that the abductors demanded US$450, 000 for the child’s return; however, the Reporter was unable to verify whether or not that amount was indeed paid.

The child’s mother, a businesswoman from Corozal, reported that she was on her way home in the Santa Rita layout area, around 7:30 p.m, when two masked men in a vehicle ambushed her and took away her baby.

The men, whose identities and origins are not know, allegedly threatened that if she did not pay the money she would not see her baby again.

Unconfirmed reports say that the suspects are known to scout the Corozal Free Zone area to look for lucrative businesses persons that they could extort.

Police Press Officer Raphael Martinez informed The Reporter that the police will give more details concerning the abduction tomorrow, Wednesday, at a scheduled police press conference.
