A 93-year-old man, who lives alone at #12 Fern Lane in Belize City, regained conscious ness on Tuesday, but remains critical in the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital (KHMH) after being robbed, assaulted and possibly sodomized on Sunday.
The family of Patrick Grant is furious over the incident. The elderly man’s son-in-law, former PUP minister, Carlos Diaz, told the Reporter on Monday that he received a phone call at 4:40 a.m. on Sunday, December 27th from one of Grant’s neighbours, informing him that Grant was sitting on a chair in front of his house and that he was bleeding from the face.
Diaz, who lives a couple blocks away said when he got to his father-in-law, he noticed that someone had broken into his front door and stolen his television set, his stereo system and a DVD player, among other smaller household items.
While sifting through the ransacked house, Diaz said he observed a used condom on the floor and pieces of a broken cement block, which led him to believe that Grant was beaten over the head and face with the pieces of cement block and sodomized inside the house. How he got to the chair in front of the house is anyone’s guess.
Diaz said that from the time he arrived at Grant’s house, the old man could not speak to say anything about the attack. Prior to the incident, he said Grant was active and used to do his own landscaping in the yard.
The police have detained one person, a man who lives in the neighbourhood and who they say had Grant’s stolen television.
