The National Trade Union Congress of Belize (NTUCB) has decided to seek legal advice following a meeting with Prime Minister Dean Barrow. The meeting was about the NTUCB’s appointment of union member, Floyd Neal to the Social Security Board of Directors.

Marvin Mora, NTUCB President said the union executive met to discuss the result of the meeting with the Prime Minister to chart a way forward on how to resolve the issue. Mora said the Congress will seek an unbiased legal opinion.

Mora maintains, that appointing Neal to the SSB Board of Directors is not a conflict of interest, even though the Christian Workers Union (CWU), which Neal serves as General Secretary is currently working out a collective bargaining agreement with the SSB.

Mora said that Neal has no direct involvement in the CBA process. Mora said that Neal will serve the SSB only in his capacity as an appointee of the NTUCB.

On Wednesday, Prime Minister Barrow indicated that he would keep an open mind and be willing to listen to a legal opinion different from his own. He said he expects the union to be flexible in offering a different candidate in place of Neal if the legal advice he receives suggests a conflict.
