Police note 56 % increase in cases of unlawful carnal knowledge

Cases of unlawful carnal knowledge have been on the rise for the past four years according to the latest crimes statistics issued by the Belize Police Department.

In 2011, the police reported incidents of carnal knowledge stood at 50. At the end of 2014, the number of cases stood at 78, a 56 percent spurt.
Under Belize law, anyone who has sex with a girl under the age of 16 commits a criminal offense which carries a jail sentence of between five and 10 years.
This law applies to juvenile offenders as well.

Belize has already seen its first case of carnal knowledge for 2015, coming out of the Stann Creek district.
In Belize, several agencies exist to assist victims and the parents of victims of carnal knowledge.
