Priority is being given to Toledo, oftentimes referred to as “the forgotten district,” for a new multi-milliondollar indoor sporting facility.
The process of procuring the architectural team has already begun, and according to Christy Mastry, general manager of Belize Infrastructure Limited, the architectural design for the facility should be completed by the end of this year.
When the architectural plans are completed, Mastry explained there will be an opening for contract bids for the building of the facility.
Construction work is expected to begin by early next year, with an the estimated completion date set for sometime in the latter part of 2015.
When finished, the new facility will feature a volleyball and basketball court, bleachers and a stage to accommodate recreational events.
Mastry said the plan is to provide these additional features for family functions in order to help stimulate economic activity in that municipality.
The cost of the facility is around $3 million and an additional investment of $1 million will be made in the existing football field in PG.
The new project, which will replace the existing PG sports auditorium near the airstrip, is one of several projects that BIL is overseeing.
