The Government of Belize this week motioned to approve some $166,565.40 in write offs as losses.

The eight write off motions were tabled at the special sitting of the House of Representatives in Belmopan on Tuesday.
The write offs were primarily for damages to vehicles, the largest beimh $60,000 for a crashed government vehicle driven by a security guard who took it without permission.

GOB motioned to write off the amount on the advice of the Solicitor General who called the issue a “litigation risk.”
Of the other vehicles that were written, the situations did not call for any disciplinary actions to be taken against any government officers.
Other write offs included damages caused to the Punta Gorda branch of the Fisheries Department, and a clerk of the Supreme Court being robbed at gunpoint of over $7,000.

The write offs had the recommendation of the Cabinet.
