New AG officially sworn in

By Benjamin Flowers

Following the December announcement of a Cabinet shuffle, former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Michael Peyrefitte, assumed his new role as Attorney General this week.

Peyrefitte swore in on Tuesday, January 3, before the the Governor General of Belize, Sir Colville Young at the Belize House in Belmopan.

Peyrefitte, who has been the speaker of the house since 2012, succeeds Senator Vanessa Retreage who resigned from office in December 2016 after serving as Attorney General for a year.

Retreage left office, causing the fourth cabinet change in single calendar year, amidst rumors that she had been threatened for the work she was doing in cleaning up the Lands Department in the Ministry of Natural Resources.

Addressing those rumors, she said that the only threatening email she received, turned out to be SPAM mail. Prime Minister Dean Barrow said that Retreage had only agreed to serve for a year in the capacity as Attorney General, and that her time was simply up.

Barrow took on the responsibility for the Ministry of Natural resources, and the Lands Department, after Retreage’s departure.

Laura Longsworth has been nominated to replace Peyrefitte as Speaker of the House. The last female speaker of the house was Elizabeth Zabaneh, who served from 2001-2008
