Bureau of Standards hosts energy efficiency consultancy

To assist with the development of the CARICOM (Caribbean Community) Regional Energy Efficiency Building Code (REEBC), the Belize Bureau of Standards hosted a stakeholder consultation to gain feedback from those in the relevant fields of expertise.

The BBS hosted the consultation, done in collaboration with the Ministry of Public Service, Energy and Public Utilities (MPSEPU, at the Best Western Belize Biltmore Plaza on November 8.

To achieve broad based representation in evaluating the building code, the BBS invited Engineers, Architects, Facility Managers, Property Developers, Practitioners involved in building design or building services/systems, Energy Service Companies and Energy Efficiency Building Code experts to participate in the consultations.

The draft REEBC, developed by the CARICOM Regional Organisation for Standards and Quality (CROSQ) in collaboration with the CARICOM Secretariat and the German Agency for International Co-operation (GIZ) is geared towards addressing the high costs associated with electricity generation and consumption and ultimately sustainable access to energy in the region, as well as green house gas emissions which cause climate change.

Participants discussed various aspects of energy efficiency in buildings including thermal performance requirements for walls, roofs, and windows; day lighting, lamps and luminaries’performance; energy performance of chillers and air distribution systems. It will also address the electrical wiring system, solar water heating, appliances, renewable energy, zoning of buildings, climate classification, and building energy management systems.

“Improving the energy efficiency potential across sectors and economies is crucial for countries to deliver not only on climate objectives, but to also improve their energy security, economic development, and citizens’ health,” the BBS added.
The consultations are in line with Belize’s own energy sector development strategy.
