Dr Marco Tulio Mendez, the PUP’s area representative for Orange Walk East on Tuesday confirmed with The Reporter Newspaper that he is leaving politics for good due to ill-health.
The neurologist by profession disclosed that following his doctors’ advice, he met with his committee on Monday night and advised his party leader, Francis Fonseca that he is unable to stand for the party in the next general elections.
Mendez shared that for the past year he has been suffering from the effects of two herneated discs which resulted from a traffic accident some years ago. .
He affirmed that although he has withdrawn from active politics, he will continue to hold medical clinics, which he says is a less strenuous profession. He added that he will support whichever of two PUP hopefuls, Josue Carballo or Dave Burgos, who will vie to replace him in Orange Walk East at convention.
This is Mendez’ first term of office in the House of Representatives and he says he intends to complete it.
During his three-plus years as a member of the House, Tulio Mendez lobbied for infrastructural upgrades in Palmar, Louisiana and other rural areas.
Mendez’ announcement came less than a week after the PUP revealed that its Cayo North Area Representative, Joseph Mahmud, will not be seeking re-election.
