HEAVY POLICE PRESENCE TO DETER GANG VIOLENCE IN THE CITY

Deputy Commissioner of Police Chester Williams sent a message to parents at the Ministry of National Security press briefing this morning. He asserted that rather than cry over what the Police is doing to their children who are involved with gangs, they should work harder to keep them away from gangs in the first place.

A proclamation has been issued by the government declaring a public emergency, and there is now a larger than usual police presence on the streets and especially crime hot-spots on the south side of Belize City.

Additional crime prevention effort has been activated in Belize City which give law enforcement authorities broader powers to detain gang affiliated persons and crime suspects.

The new detention laws and efforts are a response to a very violent weekend in Belize City, in which there were several murders, many of them gang related and or occurred in gang turf neighborhoods, the police and the government are making an effort to mitigate the ongoing violence.
