ARAGON TALKS ABOUT DRUG PLANES

Minister of State in the Ministry of National Security Elodio Aragon Jr. told the Reporter on Monday that the recent trend of suspected drug planes landing in northern Belize is an issue that needs to be seriously addressed before it becomes something of an even bigger nature in the near future.

Since the beginning of the year, while numerous wrecked aircraft have been found abandoned on private airstrips and on deserted roads, Police have never been able to make any arrests or offer any direct intelligence on what they suspect were the cargoes on the aircraft prior to their unauthorized and suspicious landings in Belize.

Aragon, however told the Reporter that the Police Department is aware that the findings are related to drug trafficking and ”drug organizations that are in collusion with others. It’s not only a local issue, but one that has implications and connections elsewhere.” Aragon further explained that because many players are involved in the underground dealings it is a challenging issue for the Police Department to investigate.

Further elaborating on the issue, Aragon noted that the discoveries remain a concern for the Police Department because that scale of criminal activity is a threat to national security. He explained that the department, ”needs to give it the weight of what it can become and by doing that they could then effectively deal with the situation before it gets out of hand.”
