BABY ETANA LAID TO REST

BABY ETANA LAID TO REST

The memory of the little pink casket in a horse-drawn carriage through the streets to the Lord’s Ridge Cemetery on Wednesday will be a lasting reminder to the family and friends of Etana Bennett, 3, of how viciously she was taken from them in the middle of the night.

The loss is one that her mother, Alva Moody, 28, says is too great to relive the moment when her baby was shot in her head as she slept in what others would ordinarily consider to be a safe haven – home. But home proved to be a deadly battleground where one gunman sought revenge, presumably on the child’s father, Roy Bennett.

Moody told the Reporter the day after she laid her little girl to rest that picking up the pieces and carrying on without her will be a tall order, but one that she has found solace in since the murder by replaying Etana’s voice when she tried to cheer her up. “Nuh cry mommy, hear? Nuh cry. I love you!”

The pre-schooler was going to turn four on Independence Day and even though she was just a child, Moody said she already had ambition and great plans to take care of her when she grew up.

Since the incident, her parents have moved out of the Gill Street home, where a few years ago, Etana’s aunt Feesha Felix was also shot dead while sleeping back in 2013. Etana’s two uncles, Tyrone and Faron Felix were also victims of gun violence in two previous separate attacks. Incidentally, Etana’s grandmother, the late Therese Felix rallied behind an activist group called Mothers Organized for Peace which she co-founded in 2007, to speak out against the very cause that would end the lives of four of her family members.

Moody herself is nursing a wounded right forearm as a result of the attack. One of the many bullets that ripped through their bedroom tore through her forearm, fracturing the bone. She will be wearing a cast for the next month until the bone heals back.

Moody said Etana, who was an only child, had always told her she wanted a sister. This loss, Moody told us, has put all those plans on hold for a while.
