People’s United Party (PUP) senators, Valerie Woods and Paul Thompson, are contesting a convention to become the party’s standard bearer for the party in the upcoming 2020 general elections.

The convention is being held today at the Anglican Cathedral College (ACC) compound in Belize city. Polls opened at 9:00 a.m. and will close at 4:00 p.m.

The race leading up to the convention was heated, with senator Woods running an ad which featured party Deputy Leader Cordel Hyde singing Woods’ praises. Hyde, later publicly commented that the recording was from before he knew Woods would be contesting, then he publicly threw his support behind Thompson in the Albert division.

Woods had also accused members of the party of trying to bully her into not running. Woods stood her ground as is believed to have the support of senior members of the party.

The Reporter will have the results as they are confirmed this evening.
